When selecting a vertical mill, the most common mistake is simply telling the equipment supplier “how many tons per hour you need to process,” without providing data on the feed material and the desired product particle size. Mill throughput is not a fixed value; the same equipment can exhibit significantly different performance when processing quartz, talc, iron ore, or kaolin. A thorough equipment selection should at least include the feed particle-size distribution, maximum particle size, true density, hardness or grindability, target D50/D90/D97 values, slurry solids content, and the hourly dry‑base production rate. If downstream processes such as flotation, magnetic separation, or leaching are planned, it is also essential to specify whether over‑grinding is acceptable. Finally, laboratory tests should be conducted to determine the appropriate ceramic‑media diameter, gradation, charge level, effective mill chamber volume, and stirring peripheral speed.

When scaling up to industrial production, the specific energy consumption and residence time determined in laboratory trials should be used as the basis. Only by simultaneously defining the feed material, target particle size, throughput, and energy‑consumption constraints can the model and motor power of a vertical wet‑grinding system be meaningfully designed.
